Welcome to EmployAble

EmployAble believes that people with learning disabilities who want to work can work if given the appropriate support. Being able to work and to feel valued and included in society is the basic human right driving EmployAble's mission to achieve successful employment for people with learning disabilities.

How does EmployAble work?
  • We understand our candidates with learning disabilities, their capabilities and what is important to them
  • We work with employers to identify their vacant roles that match our diverse candidate pool
  • We assist employers in making any adjustments needed to support prospective candidate inclusion
  • We provide ongoing training and support for our candidates and employers to first secure and then maintain their employment

What We Do

Supported Employment

EmployAble creates opportunities that are mutually-beneficial to candidates and employers alike. We develop thoughtful partnerships, working with employers to identify suitable roles within their recruitment needs to match the aspirations of our candidates. We provide candidates with on the job training and support to secure and maintain their employment.

Our ethos

We adhere to the British Association for Supported Employment (BASE)’s ‘Place, Train and Maintain’ concept. This means placing people in work at the earliest opportunity, training them on the job to do what the employer wants, and providing ongoing support to maintain this.

The process
  • Get to know the candidate
  • Identify the candidate's job aspirations and agree the steps needed to upskill if necessary
  • Understand the employers' needs and identify suitable vacancies
  • Get to know the job, working environment and team
  • Match job opportunities to suitable candidates
  • Support the recruitment process
  • Support employers and employees in the workplace

The historic lack of access to employment for people with learning disabilities has resulted in their lack of expectation and aspiration to work. Current recruitment processes are another major barrier. EmployAble aims to change this by fostering our candidates desire and ambition to work whilst partnering with employers to find creative ways to approach recruiting and find the right person for the right job.

Recruiting Talent

Filling vacancies is costly and time consuming. EmployAble approaches the Employer Partners’ recruitment needs in creative and efficient ways. By reviewing a job descriptions and dividing it up into tasks we can carve out discreet roles suitable for our candidates. We encourage work trials to inform recruitment and provide one to one support before, during and after the process.

EmployAble supports employers with all the adjustments needed to support diversity, equality and inclusion including the development of the necessary policies and procedures. We are also able to offer education, training and support to our Employer Partner’s staff team as required.

Who We Are

About Us

Only 4.8% of UK adults with learning disabilities are employed. This means that over 95% of adults with learning disabilities are being denied the right to aspire to a career and the benefits of working such as having better emotional and physical health, increased independence and a widened social circle.

EmployAble believes that all people with learning disabilities who want to work can work with the appropriate support and should have the right to work and the right to feel included as valued members of society. Our mission is to work with partners to provide the support needed to facilitate this process.

Our Leadership Team

EmployAble is a project of the Maurice Hatter Foundation and governed by its Trustees: Piers Barclay, Fausto Fulotti and Richard Hatter.

EmployAble is being led by Dr Beverley Jacobson. Bev is a medical doctor with a Master’s in Business Administration and 14 years of experience as a CEO of learning disability charities Kisharon ( 2008 – 2018) and Norwood (2018- 2022). Bev has four children, the eldest of whom has cerebral palsy, a severe visual impairment and learning disabilities as a result of meningitis contracted at birth. Bev is a passionate advocate for the inclusion of people with learning disabilities and autism and has worked tirelessly for decades to change the way society perceives disability, to raise the aspirations of people with learning disabilities and provide them with equal access to educational, living, leisure and employment opportunities. Bev staunchly supports the right of people with learning disabilities to work and to feel included as valued members of society.

"Tom's Story"**

Tom is an anxious young man with learning disabilities. Before we met Tom, he seldom left his home and was often overwhelmed with anxiety. When we began working with Tom, we discovered that he loves animals and finds being with them soothing. Tom is also fastidious about keeping his surroundings clean. So when Whiskers and Wags Pet Shop was looking for a cleaner, Tom was an obvious match.

Tom was placed in the role supported by his job coach Craig. It took Tom little while to allay his fears and settle into the role but over time he began proving himself to be a hard-working and committed employee and the shop is delighted with the appointment.

"Tom is unrecognisable since he started in the role. He has grown in self-esteem and confidence and has become a happy and valued team member”  Craig, Tom’s Job coach

** Names have been changed for GDPR purposes. Tom's employment was secured by Dr. Bev Jacobson, EmployAble CEO, in a previous role.
